Signature Accessories: Collections That Tell Your Story —
WHEN YOU WALK INTO YOUR HOME, CAN YOU DISTILL WHAT REPRESENTS YOU BEST THERE?
That essence is key behind any of my projects – getting to the crux of what makes you…you. Gone should be the home design that simply looks good. There is no need for the façade. An interior should immediately feel warm and full of emotion, so that you feel good and any friends you have over do too!
As you know from my work, I play with a lot of elements. Depth, proportion, texture, color, pattern. Things that are sleek, new, shapeful, but also pieces that are old, worn and nicely patinaed through their use over time. Because I am a collector – and am often there to help set my clients on the path of strong collections, I often incorporate them as a signature moment in my spaces.
Below are a few of my favorite moments from my own home. I hope they inspire you to start a personal collection of your own.
MORE THAN AN EMPTY BOTTLE
On a table near my entryway sits a wonderful brass display case I found at auction one day many years ago. I love this spot, because it brings together a constantly evolving collection of items from my life, my past, and my travels.
Hand-made and bold artisanal items take part in the majority of my spaces. This African ceremonial headdress is beautifully detailed and full of fantasy. Alongside a thrown clay plate, loosely speckled, an ancient Norse spoon, and spearheads that I found as a child, you can see the humanity in each piece. It’s that signature touch that connects us with our space; providing a direct connection to the soul. This area makes me happy each time I pass by, and it always fascinates the kids in our neighborhood to see what’s new.
A FAVORITE FIND
Sculpture is often underrated in my opinion. This fabulous abstracted fish was something I found years ago in an antique store. The texture and reservedness of it struck me immediately and I was in love. It sits a s a daily reminder in my dining room and watches us as we eat and laugh.
Shape and all it’s softness lead my love for this piece. Every time I walk past it, I reach out to touch it – almost without realizing it by now. The distillation that the artist was able to accomplish, by abstracting and simplifying the shapes, makes this piece a favorite in any room.
Design that imparts a part of the owner’s personality and life story into the space will always feel richer and more authentic, and will welcome visitors into your home in a more genuine way. I encourage you to seek out items that incite joy or remind you of cherished moments in your life, and to cultivate and display those items prominently.
