This Vs. That: When To DIY Versus Hiring A Pro —

Keeping up with all that needs to be done around the house can be tough. It takes physical, financial, and let’s face it ? emotional effort to get started on all the “little” projects that you want to be done. Sometimes it’s easier to hire a pro and sometimes it’s easier to do it yourself. But, how do you know when to pick up the hammer or pass it on? In today’s This vs. That, we’re breaking down the times where you might be debating…

HIRING A PRO VS. D.I.Y.

It can be empowering tackling the needs of the household on your own, and we do encourage it. There are plenty of D.I.Y. projects that you can do. With all the resources, like YouTube and HGTV, at your fingertips, it’s easy to educate yourself and feel more confident in what you decide to take on. But one thing is for sure, there are definitely tasks that only a professional should handle.

DIY: PAINTING

Painting is a task that you can tackle if you have the will (and the patience) to do so.

PRO: ELECTRICAL

Electrical is not something an amateur should try to mess with. I’m sure this isn’t shocking (pun intended) to most of you, but taking on electrical jobs can be dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing.

DIY: TILE WORK

Tile work can be done on your own. You could lay down a tile floor or put up a backsplash with the right tools and materials.

PRO: REUPHOLSTERING

Reupholstering is not something anyone with a sewing machine can take on. It’s a heavy duty undertaking and is best left up to the professionals.

DIY: LANDSCAPING

Can’t forget about the home’s exterior! Landscaping is a great way to get in touch with nature and exercise your green thumb. Just remember to stay hydrated while you work.

PRO: PLUMBING

Plumbing is a job for the professionals. Sure, some people can unclog a toilet or tighten a leaky sink on their own. But if you’re trying to relocate your shower or change out your tub, we recommend hiring a plumber. Perhaps the services of somewhere like Apollo plumbing should be you first port of call when you need a particularly troublesome plumbing problem resolved pronto.

DIY: HARDWOOD FLOORS

Whether you’re laying new ones or refinishing old ones, with the right preparation, working on hardwood flooring can be a do-it-yourself task.

PRO: RENOVATING OR REMODELING

If you’re considering a bigger vision for your home improvement, perhaps you want a cinema room or have seen some great cupolas for sale, you should consult with a professional. This way, you will know if your renovation idea is even a feasible possibility and how you should go about making these big changes. Whether you’re looking for interior or exterior remodels, it should always be your first inclination to find the help of professionals such as Stateline Exteriors or other companies; depending on what remodeling work you’re wanting to be completed.

Hired help could assist you with determining which process you actually need like we do here at Turnstyle. Or they can help guide you and plan what needs to be done, as well as when and how it should be done.

Contractors and Interior Designers are extremely helpful when taking on projects in the home. We happen to know an Interior Designer if you need a reference 😉

So, don’t let the process of investing in your home overwhelm you. Take the time to assess what needs to be done, and whether or not you feel confident enough to take that on. And don’t think that just because we have a task on our D.I.Y list it means you can’t hire a pro to do it.

If you feel like you’d rather hire someone to paint your house or lay down your tile, that’s ok too. In the end, it’s all about what you feel comfortable taking on and what you’d rather trust a professional to do.
