Decorating Your Baby’s Nursery In Less Than 10 Steps —
When you are expecting a new little presence in your home, the list of tasks involved in the preparation can be intimidating. Not only do you have to plan for this child’s future, but you might also feel the need to consider the space in which this baby will grow up, and make sure that the room feels just right, in order to help nurture your little one. To ensure you that the task can be carried out relatively painlessly (and can be quite fun!), we’ve listed here a basic plan to help you think things through when decorating your precious new baby’s room.
1.) Beyond ensuring that the room is prepped and ready to go, first start with a quick outline (in list-form or otherwise) of what’s important to you. Seek out what ‘feel’ you want in your baby’s space.
This is a great time to reference your own childhood memories, or those of your partner. Drawing from your own collective nostalgia and design loves from the past can help you determine the overall, aesthetic direction of the room.
2.) Secondly, just like our palette above, implement a color scheme.
Don’t be shy – a baby’s space is often thought of as more soothing in color, but feel free to turn up the volume to what is perhaps a more muted but intense version of a color, to make an impact. Strong, dusty roses or deep, blue-greens are an excellent example of this. Babies love to see contrast when developing their eyesight, so bold can be both useful and beautiful. Remember, stay true to whatever aesthetics and atmosphere you want for your baby. By tapping into that mind-space throughout the design process, you can ensure that you will not lose focus and that your overall design will feel harmonious.
3.) Next, lay out your space plan.
Noting what furniture pieces you need, which you prefer, and where you can be cozy with your little one at any time – including the middle of the night.
Typically, only 3-4 pieces are needed for the space, and they include your crib (The Babble Out has a great buying guide here,) a changing table, a dresser and a rocker, or another comfortable, upholstered chair for rocking your little one back to sleep. It’s also smart to plan out such design elements as a decorative pouf, and any accent pillows that you think will tie the room together.
4.) Then, think flooring.
Because it’s always important to think about longevity, keep the center of the room open and carpeted (in hard-wooded rooms, for sensitive bambinos) to encourage lots of crawling and future floor-playtime. Not only does a plushy area rug add an extra layer of padding to help keep your baby safer during playtime, it will help dampen sound too, helping Mom and Dad keep quiet with all the tip-toeing in and out. I’ve seen some beautiful shaggy rugs that would be perfect for a nursery (or any other room in fact!) Remember to choose a rug that fits in with your color scheme though.
5.) On to the sheets and soft furnishings.
Use this opportunity to again think slightly longer term and invest in sheeting, blankets, and window treatments that you and your new child will love beyond babyhood. Window treatments aren’t always inexpensive, so you want to get them right the first time, since they are so important to a finished space.
6.) Next, think storage and play time.
Baskets are best since they can be easily changed as toy sizes contract, ?and a little predetermined reading nook or block-building area will serve parents and children well for countless occasions to come. 7.) Lastly, it’s time to accessorize.
