Austin Statesman: Ceiling Design —
When you think of designing a room in your home, the mind does not immediately go to the ceiling. In fact, the ceiling probably never even enters the equation.
However, there are many ways in which you can use the ceiling to re-vamp a room design or to completely change the feel of a room.
Lieve Saether of Turnstyle Interior Design has many suggestions for materials to use to make the ceiling stand out and become the focal point of a room.
“Ceilings are often overlooked,” Saether said. “Many materials can be used effectively and are also a wonderful way to highlight architecture and to draw the eye up. Wood beaming, shiplap (which is wood planking laid horizontally), wallpaper or even a unique paint color all contribute to something wonderful to literally look up to.”
Saether also recommends choosing an enclosed room to use unique colors or materials on the ceiling.
“Keep in mind it’s always best to do a unique ceiling treatment in an enclosed room,” Saether said. “As soon as the boundaries of that room are ill-defined, anything you place on the ceiling can feel overdone or out of context. Dining rooms or libraries, for example, are typically great spaces for this.”
Keeping in mind the overall feel and design of your home is also important to make sure any dramatic applications you use on the ceiling do not look out of place.
“Look at your home as a whole for visual cues on what to add to a ceiling,” Saether said. “Because a home should flow architecturally, it’s important to add any ceiling details in that feel consistent with the rest of your home’s architecture.”
